Description
Carmichaels Municipal Authority has issued a boil water advisory after a plant inspection this week indicated algae and organic materials may be passing through the plant filter.
Lloyd Richard, authority manager, said the state Department of Environmental Protection determined there was a possibility giardia and cryptosporidium may enter the authority’s treated water.
Neither of the parasites was found in the authority’s treated water during the inspection. The protozoa can result in ailments and diarrheal disease.
Authority customers are asked to bring water to a rolling boil for a minute. The advisory is in effect until further notice. Richards said new tests will be conducted next week.
Dan Bailey, authority president, said the problem developed not because of the authority’s treatment system, but because of high levels of bromide in the Monongahela River.
Bailey said he believes the increase in bromide in the Mon is coming from drilling wastewater being run through sewage treatment plants that are incapable of removing bromide and other materials.
